Course Description:  This course will include training in the detection of impaired drivers by substances other than alcohol. It will involve training in Standard Field Sobriety Test, other field tests, and eye tests involving the convergence, pupil size, and reaction to light as well as methods of determining ingestion of the substance and classification of drugs (illegal and legal) by the type of impairment. This course is an excellent preparation for officers considering Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) training.  

Equipment Needed:

 Business Casual Attire
 Note taking materials

Instructional Hours:  2 Days/16 Hours

Instructional Objectives:  After completion, the student will be able to:

 Introduction and Overview "Drugs and Highway Safety" Glossary of Terms.
 Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Review.
 Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Proficiency Examination.
 Drugs in the human body.
 Observation of the eyes and additional tests for drug impairment.
 Seven drug categories.
 The effects of drug combinations.
 Pre- and Post-Arrest procedures.

 

*** You must have successfully completed a Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Class***

 

Preference is given to officers who will agree to participate in an impaired driving roving patrol/detail the night of May 24th.  Additional details will be provided via email.
